For example, when you go to a restroom at a department store, there is sometimes janitorial. Those janitors we often see because they are working in very close and visible places for us. On the other hand, some janitors are working unseen but have a very important role, such as hospital janitors. Today in this article, we are going to go in-depth about what is hospital janitorial work and share their real voices.
Duties of hospital janitorial
A hospital janitor is usually responsible for keeping the hospital and patients’ rooms clean. Moreover, as a hospital janitor, he/she has to ensure that there are no mechanical or technical issues in the patient’s room, and if there are, it is his/her duty to report the problem immediately to the maintenance team. Since their main job is to “maintain a hospital,” when it snows, they have to shovel the snow; when a tree grows too much, they have to cut the overgrown branches. Due to the various types of work, they need to master a range of knowledge and tools. So, the differences between the janitors we know and the hospital janitors are the variety of tasks and the knowledge required to fulfill their duty.
How to become a hospital janitorial
There aren’t strict requirements. Of course, having a school diploma is helpful, but it’s mostly not necessary. According to ZipRecruiter, “Most janitors complete on-the-job training. Several professional associations offer voluntary certifications, which may improve your career opportunities.” They also suggest that some hospitals require janitors to pass a background check. Who are you?
My name is Rosalie, and I work as a hospital janitor in CDO. I have four children—two of whom are in university. Since all of them are still in school and my husband doesn’t have steady work, I take on multiple jobs and work seven days a week. (To learn more about her story, follow this article link.)
What is your job?
My job is to thoroughly clean each room, including bathrooms, floors, and even air conditioners. I work from 5 am to 2 pm on weekdays and from 4 am to 5 pm on weekends. It’s hard to start so early, but I don’t complain, as some janitors work night shifts from 11 pm to 7 am. Each shift, I clean ten rooms, which may sound like a small number, but it’s physically demanding, especially when the rooms are messy due to patient health issues.
Hard points of working as a janitorial
The rooms I clean are usually dirtier than other typical cleaning jobs. Patients often have health issues that lead to various messes, so I frequently deal with unpleasant odors and clean up all sorts of things. Patients with diabetes, in particular, tend to have rooms that get dirty easily. This is one of the hardest parts of my work.
Good points of working as a janitorial
I enjoy my work when I have kind patients. They sometimes give us snacks, and chatting with them makes the day more pleasant. Of course, we do have difficult patients who can be rude or aggressive. We need to handle this calmly, as it’s part of our job, and we understand that many patients feel anxious or are frustrated by being confined to their rooms.
How was your work during the Covid-19?
During COVID-19, it was difficult to access patient rooms, so most janitors didn’t have much work. Only a few staff members in protective clothing were allowed inside. As the pandemic eased, we were able to return to our normal duties, and I’m grateful to the hospital for prioritizing our safety.
